Set Up Wireless for Windows XP

Physical installation of a wireless network card

Note: Your laptop might look a little different than the one pictured

  3. It may be necessary to remove a "blank" or cover that is already in/on the slot. To do so push the button or flip out the tab that is to the side of the slot and then pushes it back in; this should release and allow for the removal of the "blank" or cover.
  4. The wireless card will should go into the slot easily and should not be forced; a portion of it will still remain outside of the slot. It should be facing up so that the manufacturer logo (e.g. "Lucent Technologies" or "Cisco Systems") is visible.

This concludes the hardware portion of the wireless card installation process.

Software installation of a wireless network card

Make sure you are on campus near a wireless hotspot to continue with these instructions

  1. Start up Windows XP and log-on.
  2. Your desktop screen should appear. Shortly after the desktop comes up, your laptop will find the new wireless card that you inserted during the hardware installation process. This will happen automatically without any action on your part. When it finds the card, the following pop-up will appear on the lower right of your desktop screen: "Found new hardware" — followed by the brand name of your wireless card (see Figure 2).
